<p><em>The hypocritical government you vote for has no real plans to make this nation safer, fitter and healthier.</em></p>
<p>If you vote for me I would implement real changes to give you every opportunity to be healthy.</p>
<p>I am not sure if our political parties are hypocrites or just plain ignorant. They continue spend millions of dollars on ideas, platforms and institutions that will not get the overweight individual person into action. Building a website on weight loss, offering a phone number for a chat and activating lobbyists will not reduce the obesity in this nation.</p>
<p>Your government’s actions are just pure rhetoric, media spins and blatant short term action to get media attention. Who are they kidding? This nation deserves better from its government.</p>
<p><strong>Here are 5 ways the Government can truly take action on getting people into shape, and I will not overspend on the budget.</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Make it cheaper to play sport and be a part of a club.</li>
<li>Make gym membership, sports clubs and sporting equipment tax deductible</li>
<li>Make driving to work bloody expensive.</li>
<li>Make it illegal to have children if you are too fat</li>
<li>Make vegetables and fruit extremely cheap, by over taxing fat food!</li>
</ol>
<p>We need to hurt people where it counts and reward them for being active.</p>
<p>Forking out $400 to play a sport each new season is ridiculous. Especially when you are parents with a family with active kids. When need to ensure sporting clubs get sufficient local government support and reduce the cost of insurance on clubs. We are willing to put up government officials in five star hotels but we will not make sport accessible for our children and parents.</p>
<p>I think $500 worth of sporting equipment a year should be tax deductible. Our government makes Christmas parties and staff drinks tax deductible. They want you to get drunk and over eat, but your health is your cost. Give people the incentive to buy a good pair of runners, start a gym membership or buy a new cricket bat, but still not enough that its for free.</p>
<p>It should feel like you are getting paid to cycle or walk to work that’s how good the reward must be. We must incentivize our nation to be active before and after work. Even when you catch public transport you always end up walking a bit. I want those driving to work to pay those who are exercising on their way to work. This will also reduce numbers on the road, reduce road erosion and help to towards reducing green house emissions</p>
<p>We need to get serious about breeding a nation of health people. If you are extremely over weight your children are only more than likely to be a burden on the national health. We want to encourage people to get fit before they have kids and stay fit for their kids.</p>
<p>It’s cheaper to eat Fast Food than eat fresh fruit and vegetables.</p>
<p>A government website and call line is a joke; when we make it expensive and difficult to buy good quality fruit and vegetables to eat. Independent fruit and veg stores are being squeezed out by mass producing hormone filled product at the big 2 centres. Your government must tax fast food, junk food and sweats to supplement the price of fruit and veg.</p>
<p>Having a big salad should be half the price of ordering a big mac!</p>
<p>Incentivising people to eat right and exercise will reduce the cost on the health sector, stimulate the health food industry, reduce carbon emissions and reduce the cost of maintain roads.</p>
<p>If your member of government is not willing to address this issue in a meaningful way that will actually activate people to live a healthier life, vote for me I will.</p>

<p><em>A little about Liam Phillips</em></p>
<p>Liam Phillips began his media career as a cadet on the Kalgoorlie Miner regional newspaper in Western Australia. During his cadet year he won the Best Regional News Story award at the WA Media Awards and Best News Story at the WA Country Press Association awards for uncovering corruption at a regional Aboriginal health service.</p>
<p>He then transferred to The West Australian newspaper in Perth, where he worked as a general news and features reporter and sections editor. In this time he won the AH Kornweibel Arts Prize and Tourism Prize for feature writing at the WA Media Awards.</p>
<p>Liam then moved to London where he worked as an online producer for The Evening Standard and as deputy travel editor for The Daily Mail.</p>
<p>He returned to Perth to take up a position as deputy online editor to help re-launch the website of The West Australian.</p>
<p>Following this successful launch, he moved to Fairfax Media to help launch the company’s first foray into Western Australia with the establishment of its new online-only newsroom – WAtoday.com.au. He spent three and a half years as Chief of Staff and News Editor, helping establish WAtoday as the first new media brand in WA for more than 25 years.</p>
<p>He then moved to Sydney to take up a position as Breaking News Editor for the Sydney Morning Herald.</p>

<p><strong>Q1: What makes you take notice of a good media release?</strong></p>
<p>As with a story, a media release has my attention with the heading and introduction. If it is not relevant or interesting enough for my readers within the first few seconds of reading it, then it is a dud.</p>
<p><strong>Q2: How would you like Small Businesses to write a press release?</strong></p>
<p>First and foremost, know the publication and what is relevant to it. There is no point pitching a business that does not have relevance to the publication. Also journalists will not pick up a story unless there is actually a story in there. We are not there to sell your business; we are there to inform the reader.</p>
<p><strong>Q3: During your time as journalist, what is the best press pitch you have seen?</strong></p>
<p>There is no single one that stands out, there are the ones that get sent with big fanfare, such as bottles of vodka etc but free gifts won’t make any (good) journalist take notice. It is the story, the facts and what you business has to offer readers.</p>
<p><strong>Q4: What is your pet hate about people submitting press releases?</strong></p>
<p>Arrogance. If you don’t hear back from the journalist, call them, follow up but do not take offence and become narky if your story is not picked up. That way you burn your bridges with the publication and its sister publications for good. Also long winded releases, keep it simple. Use fact boxes; make sure your facts are accurate.</p>
<p><strong>Q5: What’s your TOP 3 tips for small businesses looking to get media coverage for their business through your media outlet?</strong></p>
<p>Keep your pitch quick and simple, use dot points if need be.<br />
Know the publication, research it’s demographics.<br />
Here is my biggest tip: Read the journalists’ stories before you pitch to them, have a feel of what interests them, what they write about and cater your release to that.</p>

<p><strong>Q1: What makes you take notice of a good media release?</strong></p>
<p>Relevance to my publications, the type of brands that are involved, and most importantly, a good subject heading! I won’t read a press release unless the subject heading tweaks my interest. I wish I had time to read every one, but unfortunately that’s not the case.</p>
<p><strong>Q2: How would you like Small Businesses to write a press release?</strong></p>
<p>Spelling and grammar are extremely important. I find the problem most small businesses suffer with is the fact that they are too plug heavy about themselves. While the business is obviously important, it’s more important for us to find out how the release benefits our readers, not the business. Lastly, the structure of a release is important. You have very little time to tweak our interest so the more cleaner and structured the copy, the better!</p>
<p><strong>Q3: During your time as journalist, what is the best press pitch you have seen?</strong></p>
<p>I’ve been delivered all kinds of wacky things with a press release in order to gain some attention, from a giant inflatable thong, to all kinds of foods, to a pair of $700 sunglasses! If you’re going to go down this route, make sure your press pack stands out. Cheap and tacky gets you nowhere.</p>
<p><strong>Q4: What is your pet hate about people submitting press releases?</strong></p>
<p>Make sure you have an understanding of the publication and contact that you’re sending your release to. The amount of times I’ve had people hounding me for editorial when they really have no idea about my demographic is ridiculous. It doesn’t help for contact building when the business shows no interest in getting to know your publication.</p>
<p><strong>Q5: What’s your TOP 3 tips for small businesses looking to get media coverage for their business through your media outlet?</strong></p>
<p>1: Build media contacts. You’re more likely to have editorial success if you build a good relationship with your contacts.<br />
2: Be smart about the way you plug your business. The more advertorial it looks, the less reputable you become.<br />
3: Make your release interesting and relevant. Give us something to talk about!</p>
